be-"Attitude" is the Wednesday evening religious education ministry for our 6th through 8th graders. These classes meet in Pates Hall on Wednesday evenings from 6:15pm-8:00pm (unless there is a special field trip). The classes are led by a team of volunteer catechists. The focus of this program is connecting faith and life: helping students connect the Traditions of our faith and the Sacred Scriptures to their every day relationships and situations. Through the use of "Chosen" (a fabulous new multi-media curriculum), evenings of prayer, service opportunities, social gatherings, retreats and guest speakers, we have developed a rich and engaging syllabus for classes from October to May.
Event highlights for 2014-2015:
Prayer: In addition to regularly sharing spontaneous prayer and the rote prayers of our Tradition, students will learn about and pray the Rosary, Adoration, Lectio Divina, Taize (meditative prayer with music).
Service: Students will learn about the challenges of hunger, homelessness, employment and healthcare facing many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. We will offer our time and talent to people near and far through agencies such as Feed My Starving Children, Exodus Residence, St. Olaf Church and St. Stephens Outreach.
The Arts: Our God is one of beauty and mystery. Sometimes this is best conveyed through art such as music, theater, painting, sculpture. Our students will have the chance to view, discuss and create art throughout the year. One exciting addition to the curriculum is a December show at Open Window Theater in Minneapolis. We hope this will be a fantastic evening our for parents and their be-"Attitude" student.
Social: Once each quarter, we have "socials" where the gym may be open, or we watch and discuss a movie. These are times to grow in faith and joyful community with each other.
Retreats: Our fall retreat focuses on our identity as disciples of Jesus. We spend time in prayer, have fun building our be-"Attitude" community, volunteer at Feed My Starving Children, and celebrate with delicious meals! Our spring retreat focuses on our vocation to love and be loved. Authentic friendship, chastity, vocations to marriage, religious life and priesthood, practical skills for relationships and reconciling with friends--all are themes of our day together.
Guest Speakers: Throughout the year we invite new and wise faces into our midst. This year we will also travel to St. Michael in Prior Lake to hear faithful Catholic and musician Tony Melendez.
Protecting God's Children: The Archdiocese asks that we provide two lessons on personal safety for our children. These will take place in January 2015; a letter will precede the lessons to let you know what we will be discussing. You are always welcome to view the materials ahead of time and/or sit in on the lesson.
Liturgies: We celebrate Mass throughout the year as part of the rhythm of Catholic life and during times of celebration. Parents, siblings, neighbors and family are always welcome and encouraged to attend!
The cost for the be-"Attitude" program is $105 per student. This includes materials and field trip expenses and fees which are part of the syllabus.
