Thank you to all who have participated in preparing, cooking, serving and donating dollars and baked goods for brunches at the Ronald McDonald House(RMH) at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital! We plan to continue providing Brunch to families at RMH in loving memory of Connor VanKuiken with your continued support.
How did this all come about? Our friend Sarah Odegard sent out a call to women parishioners to help clean the pews at church. While we cleaned we visited. The fruit of our labor lie in our conversations as the visiting continued we realized an underlying theme - a distinct need and desire for the group to come together a little more formally to serve our community. Also, as a group we wanted to find a service project to honor the loss of dear little parishioner Connor VanKuiken. Lucky for us Maggie Keady already had an idea. Maggie had been volunteering at the University RMH for years and knew there was a need for home cooked food and kind hearts at all of the RMH sites. Close friends of Connor’s family knew that the RMH at Children’s had provided Annette, Jason and Dillon a place to rest, pray and pause during their last week with Connor.
Along came Julie Kenney and Liz Francios with fantastic egg bake recipes. And, thus came to be the main course for Sunday Brunch. We serve Floretine Egg Bake and Sausage Egg Bake with sausage, fresh fruit, and yogurt. A group of 7th grade girls started our baking team – Molly Keady, Maddie Froelich, Sammy Moran and Sophi Lackens. Now we have others baking too! Thanks to our bakers we always bring donated baked goodies as a treat to leave for families so they can have a snack throughout the day after we have gone.
Thanks to Sarah Kalweit, if you were dining with us at the Sunday Brunch during the Block Party this fall – you got to sample our menu. This was our “show and tell”. We hope you enjoyed the meal and the community spirit of breaking bread together.
To fund our first brunch a quiet group of women donated all of the necessities. I don’t know that they want any fanfare – but they know who they are – and we thank them! Others have quietly sent checks to the church with a simple note in the memo “RMH Brunch”. This fall at the Pearl Park Football Jamboree – Annette brought freezie pops as incentive for people to donate. Dillon and friends worked the crowd and raised $167.00. Recently Sophi celebrated remission and raised another $875.00 to sponsor brunches. Brunches cost approximately $250 per brunch. So we are able to provide a few more in the near future! Thanks to all who have donated!!
